T O P I C     R E V I E W kollmm I am looking for the names of castles that are on mountain / hill tops, and also for the names of the mountains / hills that they are on. There are thousands of castles all over the world. kollmm I never said I wanted (or expected) *all* of them. I realize now that I said "the names" instead of "some names", so that might have confused you. So - I simply want some names, or suggestions on how to go about researching names myself. But you still should give as aome further information: Are you looking for castles in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Skandinavia, Israel or somewhere else? duncan I had no confusion over your question. Now if you would be so good as to let us know in what country to look, some one will try to answer your question if we have the time. Erik Schmidt You're testing me by asking for the names of the hills/mountains as well. I can't as yet think of one where I also know that without having to look it up. If you let us know more specifically what it's for. Mainly the numbers you're after, the specific time period(if any), the type of castle features you might be particularly interested in, and country, as said above. It all helps to give you the info you're after, especially when we have so amny to choose from. Erik kollmm Okay, more explicit. I apologize for thinking that I could get away with being vague. FWIW, I am a castle and medival enthusiast, including having been an SCA'er in the past, and anyone who has spent any time around me since the 80's has had to hear about my plans to build my own castle someday... that said, this has only tangentially to do with that. I am in charge of a project which involves computer security. I have a codename for this project, but it has recently been decided by some execs that this name has to go. As it so happens, internal code-naming conventions have been all about mountains of late, and so I was thinking that a castle on a mountain would be a great codename for a security product. The location of said castle doesn't matter so much as it's history. EG, Casino might be a great name, but unfortunately the Nazis held it, and as such I can't really use it. Citadel also has a nice ring, except it also has major issues... In an ideal world, it would be a castle that was on a hill or mountain and which is famous for having succesfully held off mean, nasty invaders. Bonus points if you can find an Ottoman castle which defended against those annoying Christian crusaders! Thanks (again) for your patience and interest. Hilltop castles would probably be more realistic, mountains are very high, and most castles would only be part way up if on a mountain. Fatlips might be a good one, it's a ruined tower house overlooking the watershed of the rivers Clyde and Tweed, where they pass so close that their flood waters mix. Even being so close, and rising on opposite sides of the same hills, they empty into the seas on opposite sides of the country. No one knows who built it, but it is in a perfect position as a watchtower for invasion from England, since it covers two of the main invasion routes, the valleys of Clyde and Tweed. ------------------ 'Demeure par la verite' Visit; Gordon's Scottish Castles Resource Page Erik Schmidt Ahh. So you are after a great sounding name with a good, strong history behind it. Nimrod fortress(Qual'at Nimrud) in the Golan heights. It was built during, and survived, the crusades, mostly in muslim hands. It was large and impressive, and still is to some extent today. It lies on a ridge at the foot of Mount Hermon(Israel), but I don't know the name of the ridge. One of the last to fall, and the largest, the great fortified palace in Granada, is the Alhambra. Let me know if any of these names grab you, and I'll see if I can name the hill. I love the name "fatlips", but I don't think it's going to fly. If the hill has a different name, it could work. On the castle front - Nimrod is in the bible, too. He is a great hunter. I personally like the name, but somehow it has taken on weird connotations in English (according to Dictionary.com, we can blame this on Bugs Bunny). However, the name of the mountain it is on would be really interesting, especially as it probably has (or had) multiple names - some English (or French?), some Arabic. I just spent some time searching on the web, but I didn't get anything from a topo map perspective... Alhambra sounds great - any others in the vein? Also, is the mountain Grenada or something else? Another name for the fortress is Subeibe. The Alhambra located on hill called La Sabika, in Granada. By the way, Alcazaba, means fortress in Spanish. There is one located within the Alhambra. Bakras castle is located on the side of a mountain range in Turkey called Nur Daglari (the 'g' is accented).
